How to Clean Windows, Step by Step

Steps

1. Frame, tracks, and sill.

Use your blinds or shades in the same way. This is an excellent opportunity to take down and wash any curtains you may have, keeping in mind the maintenance instructions.

2. Eliminate your displays and vacuum or brush them to remove dust before cleaning them.

Wash them with a warm, sudsy solution if you believe they require a deeper clean. Rinse, then let them air dry fully.

3. Spray a good amount of glass cleaner on your windows.

4. Start by using a vacuum to clear the window sill, tracks, and frame of dust.

Wipe your windows from top to bottom with a microfiber cloth or lint-free paper towel. Once the glass is clear, if you notice any streaks, give them another wipe.

5. While your screens are drying, use a soft brush or disposable cloth to clean the exterior of your windows and frames of any loose debris and dust.

6. On the glass of the outside window, repeat steps 3 and 4.

To remove all the dirt from outside, you'll definitely need to put in a little more effort (or just perform a few extra rounds of spraying and wiping). Depending on how your windows are made, you might be able to clean both sides of them from inside the house. Alternatively, if your windows have removable storm windows, you can remove them entirely to clean them.

7. Reinstall your screen, hang your drapes, then stand back and take in the gleam.
